What Are Webworms?
Webworms (Hyphantria cunea) are common pests that create extensive webs on tree branches. Though not typically fatal, repeated infestations can stress pecan trees and make them susceptible to other environmental pressures.
Identification
Webworm larvae are green or yellow, covered in long hairs. They feed on leaves within the webs they build, leaving behind only the leaf veins. These webs can cover entire branches, and in severe infestations, entire trees.
Life Cycle
Webworms go through several generations per year, particularly in warmer climates like Texas. They overwinter as pupae and emerge in the spring, laying eggs on tree leaves. Each generation of larvae feeds and builds webs, often increasing in number during the fall, which is why they are sometimes referred to as “fall webworms.”
